backstreet cultural museum

first drop backdrop:
on a hot tip, went to the backstreet cultural museum. it's in the treme, has the largest collection of mardi gras indian costumes, and is home to the best boots i've ever seen- all beads and sequins sewn onto cardboard, sewn onto a pair of tennis shoes. gals dress in baby-doll costumes like this one to pay homage to the former red-light district.
every year each person in a tribe makes a new costume. this guy's costume last year had to do with the fleur-de-lis and its history, which includes being a common french slave brand. i was partial to this get-up...

robert made all of the costumes behind him.

ballin, beasts, berries

on the foraging front: berries all over the place. blackberry bushes, on concord ave. in belmont, outside of powers music school...raspberries on summer st. in somerville, across from the dog park...
then i saw the best-decorated cookie ever, in the houston airport...
and now i'm in new orleans, hanging out with a crew of potbellied piglets that are the stars of a movie with beasts and amazing models of dilapidated telephone poles.

hard times for young lovers

a lot of wee birds out there had a rough time. in memoriam of the flightless.
this mess is right under a nest some birds have been working on for some time in the front of the rose. today, tragedy struck.

sew-a sowa

wandered around first friday in the south end in bosstown with a crew of reputable characters last night. some good things to be seen at samson projects (including the lovely maria molteni) and some good ceilings by carlin wing (who, it turns out, organized the great "bizarre animals" night at the harvard natural history museum) at anthony greaney
aaand sweet damn, lauren dicioccio's sewn sculptures are great. her work is at walker contemporary  right now. at first i was smitten by the organza plastic bags...

then whoa, check out the 35mm sewnslide...
and this amazing sewn vanitas

cool skies over idaho

canadian mist

ah, almost-summer in new england. right now it's a bit dampened/smoked out by a canadian mist that is less whiskey and more smoke from fires up north. montana flashbacks abound. in the meantime, some moments of clarity to keep the summer glory in focus. for starters: great 1930s travel poster show at the boston public library..vib gained access to the sailboat topiary at duck village

bagheera got iced up
AND: summer internet is back. post your mixtapes accordingly.
